In the decades after Gershwin's death in
1937, Oscar Levant became the recognized interpreter of Gershwin's piano
music and the keeper of the flame.
Levant prefaced his encores with an
announcement that he was "playing under the auspices of Mt. Sinai"
(the high-profile Los Angeles hospital often patronized by the stars).
His first embrace with Judy Garland, he
speculates, "may well be the greatest moment in pharmaceutical history."
